The Tai, coming late into Southeast Asia, brought with them some Chinese artistic conventions, but they soon shed them in favour of the Khmer and Mon customs, and the only indicators of their earlier contact with Chinese arts were in the style of their temples, particularly the tapering roof, and in their lacquerware.

Indonesia, despite conversion to Islam which opposes specific forms of art, has kept many forms of Hindu-influenced art, practices, culture and literature. An example is the *Wayang Kulit (Shadow Puppet) and literature like the Ramayana.

An inverted triangle extending from the snowbound Himalayan ranges of Asia toward the equator is formed by the Indian subcontinent. Known also as South Asia, the area includes the nations of Bhutan, and India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal the Tibetan highlands form part of the region.

The artistic remains, consisting of sacred image in addition to sensuous, commonly flamboyant bodies of girls, emphasize the intermingling of the holy and the secular in India's artwork.

India is the biggest single nation of South Asia. India's now twenty-four states display a cultural diversity comparable to that found among the nations of Europe. The Tamil area of South India has dance types, a language, script, musical tradition, and an artistic heritage that are fairly different from those found in, say, Punjab in the north. It is this diversity which makes the artistic conventions of India rewarding to follow and complicated. What Is Contemporary Art?

With globalisation, contemporary art became a worldwide occurrence. The belief of contemporary art as a 'Western merchandise' no longer applies. Artwork hubs are not limited to a select group of cultural capitals in the West, but all have mushroomed all over the world. Cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Mumbai, Sydney, Dubai and Istanbul epitomise this tectonic shift in the ethnic landscape. Asian countries may not share the same culture, faith or political climate, but their growing economic significance on the world stage has found the development of contemporary art markets in the region that only a couple of years ago would have been inconceivable.

Two decades past, Asian artists had to travel to the West to find liberty of expression and unfettered imagination, but due to rapid economical liberalisation and raising social mobility in the area today, countries like China and India have created their own flourishing art landscapes and are now major players in the international market place. But China and India are only the most visible indication of a widespread flowering of the arts across Asia. Southeast Asian artwork, which for the past decade has been slowly gathering momentum, is ready to make a breakthrough on the world stage.

Contemporary art is an international 'language', which assumes as its starting point a complete rejection of prescribed aesthetic or ideological orthodoxies. Contemporary art, which in its character is international and cosmopolitan, supports the notion of art that's free from nationalist programs.
